A treadmill is one of the most popular exercise machines for running or walking on the spot. The speed and incline of the conveyor belt can be adjusted giving the user the option of using the treadmill for getting toned, losing weight or to improve cardiovascular fitness.

Before you start

  • Consider your health – if you have any pre-existing conditions get a check up with your doctor before you begin. The treadmill is not recommended for people with joint or muscle problems involving the knees, ankles or back.
  • Choose suitable clothing – shoes should feel cushioned and comfortable with good support for your arches and plenty of room in the toes. Wear a tee shirt and shorts as you will get sweaty and have a towel to wipe off the sweat.
  • Have water available –drink water before your workout as well as during it as sweating will leave you dehydrated if you don’t replace the lost fluids.
  • Warm up and cool down –always start and finish by walking on the treadmill for a few minutes to relax the muscles.

How to use a Treadmill

CONTROLS

Know how the machine works there are a number of buttons which will control the speed and incline of the machine and an emergency stop button. Also there are screens to let you know things like calories burnt, heart rate, speed, time lapsed and inclination. There may be a number of preset programs to help you follow a preset routine.

DON’T HOLD ON

Don’t hold onto the bars. While this is OK for the beginner, holding on prevents you from finding your natural posture and rhythm and will burn less calories because you are supporting part of your own weight.

LAND MIDSOLE

Be aware of how your foot lands, you should try to land midsole. Landing on your toes can cause shin pain and landing on heels can put stress on the knees. However its important not to look down at your feet as this can cause you to lose balance and may strain your neck.

INCREASE WORKOUT

Don’t stop in the comfort zone when on the treadmill, to achieve greater benefits increase the speed or incline or try interval training. However, excessive muscle soreness or pains that get worse after each workout means that you are overtraining so a re-evaluation of the program is necessary.

Print Out This 45-Minute Interval Workout and Say Goodbye to Belly Fat

Think treadmill workouts are too boring to endure? Intervals are the antidote! Playing around with speed, timing, and rest periods keeps both the mind and body busy. Interval training is also one of the best ways to beat belly bulge, so torch some serious calories with this 45-minute treadmill workout.

Set the incline to one percent to prevent shin splints. As with all our workouts, feel free to increase or decrease speed depending on your level of fitness. But doing so will alter the amount of calories you burn.

This Treadmill Workout Will Probably Be the Most Intense 30 Minutes of Your Day

It didn’t take much convincing to see why Sandra Bullock, Amanda Seyfried, and Kim Kardashian all flock to Barry’s Bootcamp — 15 minutes into my first class, I was in love. The hourlong mix of high-intensity treadmill intervals and circuit training left me a sweaty mess, and I was already planning my next class on the way out of my first.

While nothing beats the full 60-minute class, the running segments are a workout on their own. For days when strength training isn’t in the mix, we have a 30-minute treadmill workout from Barry’s Bootcamp trainer Alycia Stevenin to give you a taste of what the class is like. You’ll move through sections of intervals, hill work, and sprints, which will challenge both your endurance and speed. While the workout is meant to be done as a whole, you can easily pull out any section and repeat it four to five times if you’d prefer to focus on a specific area.
